Resumen
El siglo XIX supuso el auge de la enseñanza de idiomas en los Estados Unidos. Con la nación configurada apenas un siglo atrás, fueron muchos lingüistas, políticos, comerciantes y profesores que vieron un nicho de mercado en la enseñanza de español a los estadounidenses de origen anglosajón y germano, procedentes de Europa, y a sus descendientes. El español era una lengua especialmente importante en el país debido a su presencia en Norteamérica desde el siglo xvi y a su categoría de lengua dominante y oficial en la mayoría de los países de Centroamérica y Sudamérica. Así, centros neurálgicos de universidades y de editoriales, como Boston y Cambridge en Massachusetts, fueron testigos de la ferviente actividad editorial de autores que se lanzaron a la publicación de no pocos textos de enseñanza de español, entre los que encontramos vocabularios bilingües, gramáticas, diccionarios y manuales. La Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española, que constituye el punto de partida de este trabajo, nos ha permitido reunir no solo las publicaciones de obras de enseñanza de español de Massachusetts, sino también reconstruir muchas de las vidas de sus autores, que en ocasiones habían pasado casi desapercibidos para la historia.
